Literature Text

Strings of light reach for your upturned face
and it's soft on your skin like delicate lace.

You, a dreamer denied the luxury of choice;
A worker forced to surrender his voice.

For the sake of balance
you join this natural alliance.

Until one day you reached for the forbidden
as its turbulence is masterfully hidden.

Blurred vision and racing thoughts unable to travel far
like lightening bugs captured in a soiled jar.

You crave the possibility of escape
yet in your rush, become the victim of fate.

For your misguided ambition, you must pay
so that the others may live another day.

As you fall, there is no time for regret
as you begin to understand this is your debt.

Your fall from grace leaves an empty space
so another may have a place.
A poem I had to write for my AP English Lit class about the painting The Fall of Icarus by Pieter Bruegel.

Enjoy.
